If you received this newsletter by email, you may have noticed the image of the spring flowers that serve as the entry page. This may seem a bit strange to you, especially if you are in the grips of winter weather where you live. For those of us in Victoria, however, it isn't. February is typically when our city begins to bloom. Soon View Street, just a few blocks from the college, will be canopied with pink Japanese plum blossoms and throughout the city flowers will burst through the ground.

Despite the signs of spring, I suppose this time of year a Happy New Year is in order, albeit a little belated. We are back in full swing with 7 programs in session, including what has proven to be a sensational launch of our Traditional Thai Massage program.

Speaking of launches, at the recent Victoria Health Show we launched our new line of teas, known as Pacific Rim Organics. We currently have more than a dozen varieties of certified organic black, green, oolong, rooibos and herbal teas in stock. The herbal teas are our custom blends designed by James Christian, Dean of the School of Phytotherapy, and herbal students. All teas are available for purchase at our college and will soon be in select retail outlets.

With our beautiful weather, unique organic health products, bookstore, student clinic and exciting educational opportunities, there has never been a better time to visit our campus. Call or email today to make your appointment, or simply stop by. We look forward to meeting you.

Enjoy the newsletter!

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine admission requirements change

Students wishing to study Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine in British Columbia no longer need to have 60 credits of university-transferable coursework. The governing body of Chinese Medicine in BC (CTCMA) has modified provincial bylaws to permit students with only a high school diploma to enrol in and complete academic programs. If this change benefits you, we encourage you to apply for admission into our School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine for May or September 2010. Our new admissions application will be available online soon.

PRC Directors visit famous Chinese TCM University

Two PRC directors recently visited Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine to pave the way for a partnership that would allow for the exchange of students for clinical and classroom training. Liaoning University, located in the city of Shenyang in northern China, is home to 15,000 students studying TCM and is revered for its academic integrity, affiliated hospitals and research opportunities. The 2 institutions have reached a verbal agreement that will soon lead to clinical opportunities for PRC Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine students.

Module One of Canada's only Japanese Acupuncture Certificate Program has just concluded, but registration spaces still remain for Module Two (Manaka's Yin-Yang Channel Balancing Therapy) and Module Three (Introduction to Meridian Therapy). The 3-day modules cover a broad range of treatment techniques from Japan, including abdominal (hara) palpation and diagnosis, subtle needling techniques, moxibustion, use of intradermals, press tacks and press spheres, cupping and bloodletting techniques and Sotai. Space also still remains for the 4-hour workshop on non-needling pediatric (Shonishin) techniques to be held May 1. Modules 1, 2, 3 and Shonishin of the Japanese Acupuncture Program can be taken independently. Students who complete all 5 modules within 24 months graduate with a certificate in Japanese Acupuncture, endorsed by the Japanese Acupuncture Institute of Seattle.

Continuing Education at Alembic

Alembic Healing Arts Centre, located adjacent to Pacific Rim College, is pleased to host the Hakomi Institute of BC and the presentation of "Mindfulness-Based Counselling Skills for Bodyworkers" on March 27-28. In bodywork, often clients are opened up to deep experiences with strong emotions, images and memories. These experiences can be powerful doorways to the unconscious and important steps in healing. They can also sometimes be confusing and scary for both client and therapist if the therapist does not have adequate skills for processing what comes up. In addition, if the client has a history of trauma, it can be like opening Pandora's box. In this workshop registrants will learn how to use mindfulness as an integral part of deeper therapy, how to bring unconscious meaning to body symptoms and strong emotions, the difference between developmental trauma and shock trauma and how to respond to both, and tools more deeply explore issues and process what comes up. Tuition is $295 or $260 if registered by February 25. Please contact Rae Bilash at 250.361.2045 or info@raebilash.ca for more information and to register.

On March 14, Working Class Acupuncture (WCA) is pleased to present a workshop on Community Acupuncture. Based in Portland, Oregon, WCA has the mission of using acupuncture to create social change in health care by providing, and advocating for others to provide, accessible acupuncture for working class patients. WCA also provides technical assistance to acupuncturists who want to make their practices accessible to patients who do not have insurance. Workshop registration is on a sliding scale ($150 - $200 for professionals; $75 - $125 for students). For more information and to register, please visit Working Class Acupuncture.
