On the heels of our largest single semester intake ever, September proved to be an exciting month at PRC. Our first Yogatherapy program got off to a commendable start, the Community Herbalist Program returned with an entirely new and distinguished teaching faculty, and new students in all programs settled nicely into their respective courses. For interested students applications are now being accepted for all Winter 2010 academic programs.
October will likely not bring much of a change of pace, as it kicked off with a successful outreach trip to Kuper Island during which students harvested vegetables and replanted the community garden. We have also chosen this month to unveil our new greening plans for PRC, which begin with a food composter in our kitchen (see below to read about what critics are calling the greatest indoor composter on the market) and will hopefully soon lead to a paper towel composter and more.
Our Bookstore is stocked with over 120 titles in natural health, medicine and horticulture and also boasts our largest inventory to date of acupuncture needles, supplies and learning tools.
Enjoy the newsletter!

Outreach Road Trip, Island-Style Twenty-five PRC student body and faculty members recently spent a day on Kuper Island helping natives with crop harvesting and winter planting, and students cam e prepared with reports on local medicinal plants to share with the elders. Located in the southern Gulf Islands chain near Victoria, Kuper Island belongs to the Penelakut First Nations Tribe and has a population of 300. Discussions are underway for a return trip to plant a community medicinal garden and also to develop a PRC Global Outreach Clinic in the local health centre.
Global Outreach reaches Nepal PRC is pleased to announce 2 new Global Outreach Program partnerships - the Acupuncture Relief Project and Vajra Varahi Healthcare - which will allow select students to complete clinical training in Nepal beginning this winter.
The Acupuncture Relief Project(ARP) is a free community acupuncture clinic that travels to countries that have been impacted by poverty, conflict or disaster. The Project gives practitioners, and now PRC students, an opportunity to gain valuable field experience while making a positive impact on foreign communities.
ARP is currently working with Vajra Varahi Healthcare (VVH) to provide acupuncture to the villagers of Chapagoan, Nepal. VVH, a small charitable healthcare organization situated next to Vajra Varahi Buddhist monastery outside of Kathmandu, provides affordable healthcare in the traditions of Tibetan, Ayurvedic, Homeopathic and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
PRC is honoured to partner with both of these groups to ensure that the villagers of Chapagoan and elsewhere receive essential health services.
PRC turns Greener PRC is on a mission to become "greener" than ever before. Although we have always been an environmentally friendly school - with on-going recycling programs, the daily use of natural lighting, non-toxic and biodegradable cleaning products, recycled paper and much more - PRC is doing an eco-overhaul. This month we have added a NatureMill indoor composter to our student/faculty kitchen (see below), we are transitioning marketing materials onto 100% recycled paper with plant-based inks, and we are exploring paper towel composting. We will update you regularly as to our progress, and give you green-friendly tips along the way.
PRC now sells NatureMill Composters Deposit food waste any time of the day - up to 120 lbs (55kg) per month - into the indoor NatureMill XE Composter. Using an efficient composting process consisting of mixing, air flow, heat and moisture, this no-odour composter turns food waste into concentrated compost in roughly 2 weeks. The finished soil material drops into a tray in the bottom of the conveniently-sized unit and is ready for use in yo ur garden. The energy released during composting destroys odours, pathogens and seed germination. More than 70 percent of the initial waste disappears into water vapour, leaving a very concentrated compost fertilizer. NatureMill uses just 5 kwh/month of electricity and recycles its weight in waste every 10 days, diverting over 2 tons of waste from landfills over its life. The NatureMill XE is made entirely from recycled and recyclable materials. Stop by PRC today in to see our NatureMill Composter in action and to purchase yours. Traditional Thai Massage program starts in January The Traditional Thai Massage Program is a 4-month certificate program that introduces students to the philosophies, therapeutic principles and techniques of Thai Massage. Thai Massage forms the "energy medicine" component of the unique healing system of Traditional Thai Medicine - a holistic approach to health that addresses the body (through diet and herbs), psychospirituality (through practices such as meditation) and the flow and balance of vital energy in the energetic systems. During a Thai massage, the practitioner guides the recipient into various postures linked together in a flowing series, applying acupressure with hands and feet, arms and legs. Over the years, Thai Medicine and Massage have adopted and incorporated influences from Indian Ayurveda and yoga practices, as well as Chinese healing arts.
