As the year comes to a close, we are busy scheduling courses and workshops for the winter semester. Kicking off the new year is a highly-anticipated workshop on Chinese Pulse Diagnosis by Brandt Stickley. Brandt has studied extensively under Dr. Leon Hammer and teaches pulse diagnosis for Lonny Jarrett. Also in January begins our third offering of the revered Japanese Acupuncture Program as taught by the Japanese Acupuncture Institute of Seattle. Both of these unique learning opportunities have very limited enrollment positions.

The schedules for both the 3-month Community Herbalist Program and the Traditional Thai Massage Program are currently online, and the course schedules for the Diploma of Phytotherapy program and the diploma programs in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine will be published within the next week.

As you may have noticed, in addition to our educational programs, we also sell a number of lifestyle, nutritional and environmental products. Read below to learn about some of our great products and how they can help to enhance your health.

Last but not least, our green revolution continues as this month we introduce eco-conscious business cards.

Chinese Pulse Diagnosis Workshop

PRC is pleased to welcome Brandt Stickley to teach "Chinese Pulse Diagnosis". This 2-day workshop combines theoretical and didactic instruction with practical training. Students learn to palpate the 8 depths, the 6 principal positions and 24 complementary positions associated with the system elaborated by Dr. Leon Hammer. This class focuses on common and important pulse qualities, and those not identified in the TCM literature. Treatment based on unique pulse findings is also discussed. The workshop is scheduled for January 9-10, 2010, and is limited to 18 registrants only. Tuition is $300 for professionals and $250 for students and includes a course handbook. Typhoon Ketsana Relief

In late September Typhoon Ketsana made landfall in the Philippines, causing massive flooding, destruction and hundreds of deaths. A PRC student from the Philippines quickly organized a monetary collection to help support the victims. In response to the student effort, we received word that the donation was used to assist 67 families during the most critical period of need, giving hope to the poor victims and providing them assurance. We thank our students and faculty for taking quick and selfless action to provide aid.

Herbal Dispensary grows

PRC's herbal dispensary is stocked with hundreds of organic herbs in loose form for teas and in tinctured form for more potent remedies. PRC's professional herbalists dispense single herbal tinctures such as echinacea, elderberry, ginseng and more for a fraction of the cost of retail providers. Custom herbal formulations are available to those who partake in a herbal consult in either our student clinic or professional clinic, Alembic Healing Arts Centre. Contact or stop by the college today to learn about how herbal medicine can help you. Courses and programs are also available for those who want to deeply explore herbal medicine.

Green Printing Solution

When it came time to update our business cards recently, we knew we wanted to find the most eco-friendly product available to us. The Canadian-produced acid free and chlorine free cardstock used for our cards is made from 100% post-consumer waste, manufactured with bio gas energy and is both EcoLogo and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. The print manufacturing process is offset printed with waterless based inks in a CleanPrintBC certified printing facility. Next time you or your company orders printed material, seek out an environmentally-conscious printer and ask what eco-friendly options are available to you.

PRC now sells NatureMill Composters

Deposit food waste any time of the day - up to 120 lbs (55kg) per month - into the indoor NatureMill XE Composter. Using an efficient composting process consisting of mixing, air flow, heat and moisture, this no-odour composter turns food waste into concentrated compost in roughly 2 weeks. The finished soil material drops into a tray in the bottom of the conveniently-sized unit and is ready for use in yoNatureMill Composterur garden. The energy released during composting destroys odours, pathogens and seed germination. More than 70 percent of the initial waste disappears into water vapour, leaving a very concentrated compost fertilizer. NatureMill uses just 5 kwh/month of electricity and recycles its weight in waste every 10 days, diverting over 2 tons of waste from landfills over its life. The NatureMill XE is made entirely from recycled and recyclable materials. Stop by PRC today in to see our NatureMill Composter in action and to purchase yours. Traditional Thai Massage program near capacity

The Traditional Thai Massage Program is a 4-month certificate program that introduces students to the philosophies, therapeutic principles and techniques of Thai Massage. Thai Massage forms the "energy medicine" component of the unique healing system of Traditional Thai Medicine - a holistic approach to health that addresses the body (through diet and herbs), psychospirituality (through practices such as meditation) and the flow and balance of vital energy in the energetic systems. During a Thai massage, the practitioner guides the recipient into various postures linked together in a flowing series, applying acupressure with hands and feet, arms and legs. Over the years, Thai Medicine and Massage have adopted and incorporated influences from Indian Ayurveda and yoga practices, as well as Chinese healing arts. Acupuncture Volunteers needed in Africa

The PanAfrican Acupuncture Project (PAAP) is a pioneering initiative based in East Africa that provides acupuncture training to local health care workers. Since 2003 PAAP has trained more than 160 health care workers to employ simple yet effective acupuncture techniques in the treatment of endemic conditions such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, malnutrition and tuberculosis. Those health care workers have in turn used their new skills to help thousands of Africans.

PAAP will host its next training in in Lyantonde, Uganda from November 30 - December 11, 2009. Acupuncture volunteers are essential to the success of this program. Please click here for more information.

2010 Japanese Acupuncture Program

Canada's only Japanese Acupuncture Certificate Program returns to PRC in January 2010. Book of the Month

Chinese Pulse DiagnosisChinese Pulse Diagnosis by Dr. Leon Hammer is organized in 17 chapters, which are presented in an advancing hierarchy of complexity. The early chapters consider such general issues as terminology, classification of pulse qualities, historical comparisons of positions and depths, the effects of age and gender, and a methodology for taking the pulse. The middle chapters provide an in-depth look at each of the individual pulse qualities, identified by felt sensation based on such characteristics as rate and rhythm, stability, volume, depth, size, and shape. The types of pathology associated with each of the qualities are also discussed. Stop by the PRC Bookstore to get your copy today for only $91.95 each.

Continuing Education at Alembic

Reiki Level 2 with Shelley Easthope returns to Alembic on November 6-8. This Level 2 Reiki class provides a review of Level 1 and of experience in subsequent practice.
