I have heard rumours of this phenomenon called summer that is supposed to be rolling through British Columbia soon, but I have yet to officially make its acquaintance. I have seen glimpses of it here and there, up in that corner of the sky, aboard that subtle breeze, but it remains as elusive as a shadow in the night. With or without it, we have decided to move forward with the world of academia, this month marking the beginning of our Summer semester. Our herbal students have begun collecting herbs from the community, the student gardening committee is plotting plots and potting pots, and teachers are taking advantage of the sporadic warmth to host classes outside in our courtyard.

Summer is certainly not any slower for the college than other times of the year. Some students have decided to take the semester off, or, because of our condensed course offerings, half of it off, but the majority are continuing on with full-time studies. This month we welcome back the Japanese Acupuncture Students not once, but twice as they have just completed Module 4 and are set to graduate after their final clinical intensive on May 30 and 31 (see below on how to receive a treatment on the final weekend). The Hellerwork students also just completed their Spring Intensive, bringing them one step closer to graduation at the end of this year. Soon they will be needing patients for their clinical component, and we promise to keep you posted so you don't miss out.

Speaking of not missing out, time is running out on your chance to learn Five Element Acupuncture in the Worsley tradition. Renowned expert Neil Gumenick will be presenting a 2-day workshop on May 23 and 24, which is sure to be an experience not to miss for those interested in Five Elements. If that does not excite you, then perhaps our July and August Continuing Education courses will. Western Herbal Medicine and Business Development are the main topics in the late summer schedule, and for acupuncture students preparing for the BC Registration Exam, our Comprehensive Review course and Acupuncture Case Studies will help make the journey distinctly easier.

Enjoy!

Todd N Howard, President

Five Elements in Worsley Tradition by Neil Gumenick

Classical Five-Element Acupuncture, in the Worsley tradition, is one of the most complete, comprehensive, and far-reaching systems of medicine in the world. Presented by Neil Gumenick on May 23-24, this workshop will include both lecture and practical applications. For those who truly desire to treat the whole person, rather than parts, this weekend is the doorway into a system of medicine and a way of living that will transform the lives of those who practice it, as well as the patients they serve.

Neil Gumenick is one of the world's foremost practitioners and teachers of Classical Five-Element Acupuncture. He has been a Professor of Acupuncture at Emperor's College and SAMRA University and has taught at the USC and UCLA Schools of Medicine, the Worsley Institute, TAI Sophia, Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, Santa Barbara College of Oriental Medicine, the Pacific Symposium, CSOMA Expo, and the AOM Alliance Expo. He is a distinguished columnist for Acupuncture Today, and has been published in the California Journal of Oriental Medicine, the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly and the European Journal of Oriental Medicine. Neil is Founder and Director of the Institute of Classical Five-Element Acupuncture and one of only 5 practitioners in the world to be designated a Master Apprentice to the late Professor J.R. Worsley.

Those health care workers have in turn used their new skills to help thousands of Africans.

The next PAAP trainings will be held in the Rakai (HIV/AIDS infection rate above 8%), Lyantonde and Sembabule districts of Uganda from June 15-26. A Kenyan training is scheduled for August 17-28. Student Run Gardening Committee to Grow Herbs

Locally

PRC's Gardening Committee will be growing organic herbs in locations throughout Victoria, including our campus courtyard, during the summer and then in PRC's solarium during the fall and winter. The herbs, from the planting process to harvesting, will act as learning tools for students, with the finest herbs being gathered for use in medicinal teas and formulas that are made in our herbal dispensary. If you want us to cultivate herbs in your local organic garden, or to collect organic herbs already growing, please send us an email. We will arrange for garden visit to determine what herbs are right for your garden. In exchange, if your garden is selected, you will receive regular complimentary herbal consultations in our student clinic.
