Continuing Education

With the advancement of our summer semester, we are busy laying the groundwork for Fall 2009, which is shaping up to be our busiest semester ever. Not only is our enrollment reaching new levels, but we are also excited to welcome the addition of a few new programs to PRC's lineup: the Diploma of Eastern Therapies and Bodywork and the Foundations of Yogatherapy Certificate Program.

We will also have new enrollment into our existing programs, including our diploma programs in Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine and Phytotherapy (Western Herbal Medicine) and the Natural Health Program. The 12-week Community Herbalist Program also returns, but with a revised curriculum and an incredible new cast of instructors.

Just in case this is not enough, world renowned Five Elements expert Lonny S. Jarrett returns to PRC in September for what is certain to be an incredible workshop entitled "Five Elements Diagnosis". Lonny Jarrett is the author of Nourishing Destiny and The Clinical Practice of Chinese Medicine.

If you are not interested in enrolling in any particular program but would rather take individual courses for you own enrichment, our Fall Continuing Education scheduled will be released in just a few weeks. This will include courses in Nutrition, Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, First Aid and more.

Lonny Jarrett returns to PRC

PRC is pleased to welcome back renowned Five Elements expert Lonny Jarrett for the workshop "Five Elements Diagnosis" on September 19-20. On the first day Lonny will review the significance of the intake, covering everything that can be told from hearing a patient's voice to watching the patient leave the office for the first time. The intake will be examined from an integrated five-element and eight-principle perspective. Students will be taught how to discern a patient's core motivation for acting and the degree to which he or she is aware of that motivation.

On the second day Lonny will perform two comprehensive intakes on patients and dedicate a significant amount of time to diagnosis and treatment planning, including comprehensive acupuncture and herbal prescriptions. The inner nature of the acupuncture points and formulas will be discussed in the context of an integrated diagnosis. Emphasis will be placed on the discernment of constitutional type through the assessment of color, sound, odour and emotion, and the patient's eight-principle physiology. Lonny will also perform and present a detailed analysis of the pulse.

Community Herbalist Program begins in September

We are pleased to announce the return of the 12-week Community Herbalist Program (CHP) this September. The CHP introduces students to the incredible world of plants and their medicinal uses according to various cultures. Graduates of this program can use knowledge and experience gained to establish a community-based herbal clinic, work in the health and wellness retail sector, grow and maintain herbal gardens, create herbal preparations or transfer into the Diploma of Phytotherapy program at PRC. With its weekend and evening schedule, the CHP is convenient for even busy parents and working professionals. For more information and to apply, please click here.

New Diploma and Certificate Programs

This fall the School of Integrative Health at PRC is launching 2 new programs. September marks the beginning of both the Diploma of Eastern Therapies and Bodywork and the Foundations of Yogatherapy Certificate Program.

The Diploma of Eastern Therapies and Bodywork is a 2-year program that integrates the philosophies, principles and healing techniques of Ayurvedic Marmatherapy, Traditional Thai Massage and Yogatherapy, all 3 of which can also be taken as independent certificate programs at PRC. Eastern Therapeutic practitioners recognize 3 layers of being: physical, energetic and spiritual. The physical is addressed through diet and herbs, as well as touch, pressure, movement and the manipulation of tissues, organs, joints and various other systems of the body. The energetic is addressed through working with the various energy systems, pathways and elements. The spiritual is addressed through awareness, resonance, intent, visualization, meditation and ritual.

The Foundations of Yogatherapy Certificate Program is a 1-semester (252-hour) program that explores the art and science of Yoga as a therapeutic practice. Yoga has a depth of practice that extends much further than physical postures, and is not limited to those who are flexible or mobile. The practices of breath, cultivating focus and awareness through meditation and lifestyle, and the application of the eastern understandings of health, well-being and disease all work together to create a model of Yoga that is both therapeutic as well as enriching.

Free Workshops in Yogatherapy and Thai Medicine

This summer you are invited to attend 2 free workshops on Eastern healing philosophies. On July 8 join Nikki Manzie as she presents "Yogatherapy: Breath as Medicine". Breath is one of the key aspects to Yogatherapy as energy medicine. This seminar will introduce some of the theory behind the breath and various breath techniques to begin to manage and regulate your health and well-being on all levels.

On August 12 Nikki presents "Thai Massage and Medicine: The Circle of Life". This workshop explores healing through the model of Thai massage and medicine, introducing the relationship of massage to energy medicine. Participants will watch a short Thai massage demonstration and then learn a simple and wonderful hand massage that explores points and energy lines through the hands.

Both workshops will be held at PRC from 4:30-6pm. Registration is not necessary. Please click here for more information on the workshops and other events at PRC.

Student Run Gardening Committee grows

PRC's Gardening Committee recently launched its Community Herbal Garden at PRC's Market Square campus, providing education to the public about herbal identification and usage. In July the committee will be planting medicinal herbs in PRC's solarium and intends to grow organic herbs in other locations throughout Victoria. The herbs, from the planting process to harvesting, will act as learning tools for students, with the finest herbs being gathered for use in medicinal teas and formulas that are made in our herbal dispensary. If you want us to cultivate herbs in your local organic garden, or to collect organic herbs already growing, please send us an email. We will arrange for garden visit to determine what herbs are right for your garden. In exchange, if your garden is selected, you will receive regular complimentary herbal consultations in our student clinic.

PanAfrican Acupuncture Project seeks practitioners

The PanAfrican Acupuncture Project (PAAP) is a pioneering initiative based in East Africa that provides acupuncture training to local health care workers. Since 2003 PAAP has trained more than 160 health care workers to employ simple yet effective acupuncture techniques in the treatment of endemic conditions such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, malnutrition and tuberculosis. Those health care workers have in turn used their new skills to help thousands of Africans.

PAAP just concluded a successful Uganda training in June and will host its next training in Kenya on August 10-14 and return to Uganda on August 17-28. Acupuncture volunteers are essential to the success of this program. Please click here for more information.
