As the semester winds down our event calendar is ramping up for an exciting new year. Before we leave 2009 completely, however, we do have some upcoming activities and opportunities, including a Global Outreach Program fundraiser on December 7 at Irish Times Pub and a student-sponsored food and clothing drive.

Below you will see our version of a healthy holiday gift guide, as well as therapeutic (and free) treatment opportunities in our Student Clinic. Dozens of new continuing education courses are scheduled for January, and applications and registrations are still be accepted for all of our programs.

Before I sign off, on behalf of all of us at PRC, I want to wish a safe journey to acupuncture students Madhvi Aggarwal and Lynsee Leahy who are departing soon to spend nearly 2 months volunteering at a GOP health clinic in Nepal. They will generously provide acupuncture treatments and health advice to villagers there.

Enjoy the newsletter and the holiday season!

New Date for Chinese Pulse Diagnosis Workshop

After the January workshop sold out in a few weeks, we decided to schedule another weekend for "Chinese Pulse Diagnosis". Taught by Brandt Stickley, this 2-day workshop combines theoretical and didactic instruction with practical pulse training. Students learn to palpate the 8 depths, the 6 principal positions and 24 complementary positions associated with the system elaborated by Dr. Leon Hammer. This class focuses on common and important pulse qualities, and those not identified in the TCM literature. Treatment based on unique pulse findings is also discussed. The new workshop date is scheduled for March 20-21, 2010, and is limited to 18 registrants only. This one is expected to sell out quickly as there was a sizable waitlist from the original workshop. Tuition is $300 for professionals and $250 for students and includes a course handbook. Click here for more information and to register.

Fundraiser for GOP Partner

On Monday, December 7th, PRC students will be hosting a silent auction fundraiser for the Acupuncture Relief Project and Vahra Varaji Healthcare in Nepal. Through a partnership with the Acupuncture Relief Project, 2 PRC acupuncture students will be travelling to Nepal this winter to volunteer and earn clinical hours through PRC's Global Outreach Program. Vajra Varahi Healthcare is a small charitable healthcare organisation based in Chapagaon, a village just outside Kathmandu in Nepal. The Acupuncture Relief Project is a free community acupuncture clinic that travels to regions that have been impacted by poverty, conflict or disaster.

The silent auction fundraiser will be held in Victoria at Irish Times Pub on Government Street beginning at 6pm. The fundraiser is open to the public with Irish Times generously donating half of the appetizer revenue. Additionally, there will be a silent auction with items totalling more than $1500 in value. Items include Victoria Salmon King hockey tickets, an iPOD dock with speakers, a free night's stay at the Sheraton Wall downtown Vancouver, acupuncture and massage treatments at various clinics, health and beauty products from Nezza Natural and Aveda, and gift certificates from local restaurants. All proceeds on the evening will be going directly to the Acupuncture Relief Project and Varja Varahi Healthcare.

Custom herbal formulations are available to those who partake in a herbal consult in either our student clinic or professional clinic, Alembic Healing Arts Centre. Contact or visit the college today to learn about how herbal medicine can help you. Courses and programs are also available for those who want to deeply explore herbal medicine.

Natural Lighting to reduce Footprint

Whether you own a business or home, there is a great deal you can do to reduce your energy consumption. With our campus buildings being more than 120 years old, we had many obstacles against us when it came to streamlining our energy consumption. During the design process, one area on which we focused was lighting. Being in heritage buildings with 6-foot high exterior windows, we decided to maximize the use of natural lighting. We fitted all of our interior classroom and office walls, and most of our clinic walls, with windows near the ceiling to permit the flow of natural light. This design feature alone, coupled with existing skylights, permits us to limit our daytime interior light usage by more than 50 percent. Our classrooms use only natural lighting throughout the day. The most obvious result is happier students who focus better and longer throughout the day. But we also save financially as the use of natural lighting helps to reduce our electricity bill.

For friends or family living in condos, townhouses or apartments, try our NatureMill Indoor Composter. Deposit food waste any time of the day - up to 120 lbs (55kg) per month - into the indoor NatureMill XE Composter. Using an efficient composting process consisting of mixing, air flow, heat and moisture, this no-odour composter turns food waste into concentrated compost in roughly 2 weeks. The finished soil material drops into a tray in the bottom of the conveniently-sized unit and is ready for use in your garden. The energy released during composting destroys odours, pathogens and seed germination. More than 70 percent of the initial waste disappears into water vapour, leaving a very concentrated compost fertilizer. NatureMill uses just 5 kwh/month of electricity and recycles its weight in waste every 10 days, diverting over 2 tons of waste from landfills over its life. The NatureMill XE is made entirely from recycled and recyclable materials.

If you need a gift for an avid reader, browse through the more than 120 titles of natural health books in the PRC Bookstore. We are so confident that we have the best prices in Canada that if you find a book advertised somewhere else for cheaper, we will match the price.

Few Registration Spaces remain for Traditional Thai Massage Program

Only a few registration spaces remain for the Winter 2010 Traditional Thai Massage Program. This 4-month certificate program introduces students to the philosophies, therapeutic principles and techniques of Thai Massage. Thai Massage forms the "energy medicine" component of the unique healing system of Traditional Thai Medicine - a holistic approach to health that addresses the body (through diet and herbs), psychospirituality (through practices such as meditation) and the flow and balance of vital energy in the energetic systems. During a Thai massage, the practitioner guides the recipient into various postures linked together in a flowing series, applying acupressure with hands and feet, arms and legs. Over the years, Thai Medicine and Massage have adopted and incorporated influences from Indian Ayurveda and yoga practices, as well as Chinese healing arts. Please click here for more information and to register. Once the program is filled, there will be no more openings until 2011.

Book of the Month

Anatomy of MovementAnatomy of Movement by Blandine Calais-Germain presents a dynamic, integrated approach to the study of the physical structures of the musculoskeletal system and their functional relationship to the movements of the human body. In clear and concise text illustrated with more than a thousand graphic drawings, the author guides the reader on a lively tour of the muscles, bones, ligaments and joints of the arms, legs and trunk. The focus throughout the book is on anatomy not for its own sake, but in its functional relationship to the actual movements of the body in dance, exercise, and other physical disciplines. Working Class Acupuncture Workshop

Alembic Healing Arts Centre is pleased to host Working Class Acupuncture (WCA) for a workshop on Community Acupuncture. Based in Portland, Oregon, WCA has the mission of using acupuncture to create social change in health care by providing, and advocating for others to provide, accessible acupuncture for working class patients. WCA also provides technical assistance to acupuncturists who want to make their practices accessible to patients who do not have insurance. This is not about free clinics, alcohol and drug treatment, or becoming a social service agency. It is a low-cost, high-volume business strategy designed to make health care affordable.
Working Class Acupuncture
The first half of this workshop, entitled "Nuts and Bolts of the Business Model: Classism in Marketing" will be taught by Lisa Rohleder. Attendees will be presented with ideas, information, forms, and structural guidelines to shape and develop their practice around a sustainable business model. Marketing material ideas, business structure, and office tracking tools will all be covered, as well as advice on how to leverage resources and organize outreach in your community.

The second half of the workshop is entitled "Nuts and Bolts of the Treatment Model:Treat Anything in a Recliner" and taught by both Skip Van Meter and Lisa Rohleder. This portion covers Jingei pulse diagnosis, an ancient form of pulse reading. Used specifically to find the root channel of a patient's illness, Jingei uses a simple comparison of the pulses of the wrist and neck. It can then be used as the basis of a point prescription, saving much time in formulating effective treatments. Participants will learn to effectively and confidently use Jingei in their practice.

This Community Acupuncture workshop will be held at Pacific Rim College from 9am-6pm on March 14. Workshop registration is on a sliding scale ($150-$200 for professionals; $75 - $125 for students). For more information and to register, please visit Working Class Acupuncture.
