Acupuncture for the EyesAcupuncture for the Eyes
by Julian Scott
Softcover, 208 pages
ISBN: 0939616467
Price: $30.95
Acupuncture can be used for treating a wide range of eye disorders, from conjunctivitis and hay fever to glaucoma and macular degeneration. In some cases, such as degenerative diseases of the retina, there is no effective treatment in conventional medicine, while in others, like acute conjunctivitis, acupuncture offers a cure which is quicker and more effective than other modalities.

Acupuncture for the Eyes is a practical manual that can be used by any competent acupuncturist to expand the scope of their practice to include disorders of the eyes. The book provides clear, step-by-step guidelines for diagnosis and treatment coupled with a discussion of the results that can be expected.

At a minimum, all acupuncturists should know how effective acupuncture can be in treating conditions of the eye, even though they are not commonly treated in Western acupuncture clinics at the present time. This will change as more acupuncturists become familiar with this important aspect of practice, and patients learn how helpful acupuncture can be in maintaining and restoring healthy eyes.(from the publisher)

Chasing the Dragon's TailChasing the Dragon's Tail
by Yoshio Manaka
Softcover, 453 pages
ISBN: 0912111321
Price: $65.95
The text introduces Dr. Manaka's major clinical and theoretical accomplishments by describing how the "X-signal system" is the foundation of human topology, function, and response. In essence, the X-signal system defines qi, yin-yang, and the five phases as clinical events, rather than as abstract theories. Just as traditional Oriental thinkers learned and recognized these ideas through right-brain pattern recognition, Dr. Manaka chose to explore "biases," biological trends and tendencies. In this way he was able to provide practical examples of the observations from which this most basic Oriental concept is derived. While Dr. Manaka references some of the most advanced scientific thinking of our era - information theory, holographic models and new paradigms - his explanations are replete with practical tests that readers can use to explore his explanations or research their own ideas. Over 460 variations and associated formulas offer additional options for the practitioner.

The commentary to each formula has been considerably expanded. This section deepens the reader's understanding of a formula's genealogy, presents an overview of controversies regarding composition, usage, and other issues, describes the extension of a formula's application to a wider range of disorders, and provides key clinical pointers to facilitate use of the formula in the modern clinic.

A new section on comparisons has been added to this edition. This is intended to help students and practitioners focus on the distinguishing characteristics of each formula by contrasting it with other formulas that are similar in terms of composition or indication. Tables at the end of each chapter reinforce these distinctions by comparing and contrasting formulas across a wider range. (from the publisher)

Clinical Practice of Chinese MedicineClinical Practice of Chinese Medicine
by Lonny Jarrett
Hardcover, 828 pages
ISBN: 0966991613
Price: $124.95

Lonny Jarrett has written another book in his unmistakable style. In The Clinical Practice of Chinese Medicine, he continues the message that Oriental medicine is not merely a technique, but an art that draws near when its core begins to resonate with the heart and spirit of the approaching student. He invokes respect for the ancient source of the medicine, including the Five Element lineage of his teacher J. R. Worsley, and correlates them to more recent philosophical trends favored by modern TCM, but it is the writing between the lines that carries the main pronouncement of this work: at a certain stage in every practitioner's development, similar to a calligraphy student who is eventually done imitating the brush strokes of his predecessors, there is the need to soar and arrive at the heart of one's own medicine. While providing a tremendous amount of clinical information that is immediately applicable in a practicable realm, The Clinical Practice of Chinese Medicine primarily transmits this message. In a sense, this work must be read as the autobiography of a master practitioner who shows us his roots, his growth process, and the amalgamation of Chinese medicine with everything he is, thinks, and knows-all in the spirit of inspiring us to do the same. (Heiner Fruehauf)

Diagnosis in Chinese MedicineDiagnosis in Chinese Medicine
by Giovanni Maciocia
Hardcover, 1127 pages
ISBN: 0443064482
Price: $169.95
The book combines a detailed analysis of clinical manifestations, comprehensive quotations from the classics with the nuggets of wisdom from Giovanni's clinical experience. Of the features of Giovanni's diagnostic work is the capacity to adapt Chinese medicine's diagnostic process to the realities of Western patients. For this reason, the list of symptoms and signs in Part 5 of the book contains many symptoms that are typical of Western patients and that are not found in Chinese books (e.g. "Craving for sweets","Hyperactivity in children", etc.).

The book is divided into four Parts dealing with the traditional four aspects of the Chinese diagnostic process, i.e. Observation, Interrogation, Palpation and Hearing/Smelling. In addition to this, Part 5 lists the symptoms and signs independently of whether they are elicited from observation or interrogation. This allows the practitioner to quickly consult the book when confronted with a patient displaying a particular symptom: Part 5 on Symptoms and Signs will list the patterns giving rise to that particular symptom. A comprehensive index of symptoms and signs will then allow the practitioner to delve deeper into that symptoms in the Parts of Observation or Interrogation. (from the publisher)

The Earthwise HerbalThe Earthwise Herbal: A Complete Guide to Old World Medicinal Plants
by Matthew Wood
Softcover, 592 pages
ISBN: 9781556436925
Price: 28.95
Noted herbalist Matthew Wood brings twenty-five years of clinical experience to this comprehensive book on medicinal plants. The first in a two-volume set, The Earthwise Herbal profiles Old World plants (volume two will treat American plants). Organized alphabetically, the book encompasses all of the major - and many of the secondary - herbs of traditional and modern Western herbalism. Author Wood describes characteristic symptoms and conditions in which each plant has proved useful in the clinic, often illustrated with appropriate case histories. In addition, he takes a historical view based on his extensive study of ancient and traditional herbal literature. Written in an easy, engaging, non-technical style, The Earthwise Herbal offers insight into the "logic" of the plant: how it works, in what areas of the body it works, how it has been used in the past, what its pharmacological constituents indicate about its use, and how all these different factors hang together to produce a portrait of the plant as a whole entity. Ideal for beginners, serious students, or advanced practitioners, The Earthwise Herbal is also useful for homeopaths and flower essence practitioners as it bridges these fields in its treatment of herbal medicines. Point names, the traditional Oriental means for identifying acupoints, have meanings that are, like the wind, hard to grasp. Yet enfolded in these often poetic words is a utility found nowhere else. In discussing the point names, the authors clarify the meaning, context, and significance of each acupuncture point and promote a subtle understanding of that point's role in acupuncture practice. Each of the 363 points covered is listed according to the system currently used in China. Descriptions include the name in Chinese characters, in Pinyin, and in English. The traditional location according to major Chinese texts of the classical periods, the associated point groupings, an explanation of point functions, and classical qi paradigm associations are also noted. Further detail is provided by inclusion of channel relationships, five-phase identification, and experiential information. (from the publisher)

ISBN: 0-912111-13-5
Price: $94.95
Sale Price: $76.95
Hara Diagnosis presents the theory and practice of abdominal diagnosis with the greatest care ever applied to an important diagnostic technique. Beginning with a historical and cultural perspective on the use of palpation in general, and abdominal palpation in particular, the book details the information required to master and extend the techniques presented. Included are important descriptions of the role of emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of Chinese medicine. Detailed etymologies, descriptions of historical context, and quotations from classical sources are used to provide a range of insights into hun, po, zhi, jing, and shen, as well as many other seminal concepts.

This text offers an exceptionally well detailed exploration of interior meridian pathways and the role of classical Chinese energetic anatomy, including concepts such as source and origin of qi. The chapters on the dynamics of the triple warmers and the scientific exploration of the qi paradigm are widely regarded as having set a new standard for the relationship of traditional Oriental concepts and Western research. Healing with Whole FoodsHealing with Whole Foods
by Paul Pitchford
Softcover, 750 pages
ISBN: 1556434308
Price: $46.95
Sale Price: $38.95
Used as a reference by students of acupuncture, this is a hefty, truly comprehensive guide to the theory and healing power of Chinese medicine. It's also a primer on nutrition - including facts about green foods, such as spirulina and blue-green algae, and the "regeneration diets" used by cancer patients and arthritics - along with an inspiring cookbook with more than 300 mostly vegetarian, nutrient-packed recipes.

The information on Chinese medicine is useful for helping to diagnose health imbalances, especially nascent illnesses. It's smartly paired with the whole-foods program because the Chinese have attributed various health-balancing properties to foods, so you can tailor your diet to help alleviate symptoms of illness. For example, Chinese medicine dictates that someone with low energy and a pale complexion (a yin deficiency) would benefit from avoiding bitter foods and increasing "sweet" foods such as soy, black sesame seeds, parsnips, rice, and oats. Lost Language of PlantsLost Language of Plants
by Stephen Buhner
Softcover, 336 pages
ISBN: 09781890132880
Price: $23.95
This could be the most important book you will read this year. Well-known author, teacher, lecturer, and herbalist Stephen Harrod Buhner has produced a book that is certain to generate controversy. It consists of three parts: 1) A critique of technological medicine, and especially the dangers to the environment posed by pharmaceuticals and other synthetic substances that people use in connection with health care and personal body care; 2) A new look at Gaia Theory, including an explanation that plants are the original chemistries of Gaia and those phytochemistries are the fundamental communications network for the Earth's ecosystems; 3) Extensive documentation of how plants communicate their healing qualities to humans and other animals. Western culture has obliterated most people's capacity to perceive these messages, but this book also contains valuable information on how we can restore our faculties of perception.

The book will affect readers on rational and emotional planes. It is grounded in both a New Age spiritual sensibility and hard science. While some of the author's claims may strike traditional thinkers as outlandish, Buhner presents his arguments with such authority and documentation that the scientific underpinnings, however unconventional, are completely credible.

The overall impact is a powerful, eye-opening expos' of the threat that our allopathic Western medical system, in combination with our unquestioning faith in science and technology, poses to the primary life-support systems of the planet. At a time when we are preoccupied with the terrorist attacks and the possibility of biological warfare, perhaps it is time to listen to the planet. This book is essential reading for anyone concerned about the state of the environment, the state of health care, and our cultural sanity.(from the publisher)

Sports AcupunctureSports Acupuncture: The Meridian Test and Its Applications
by Mukaino Yoshito
Softcover, 213 pages
ISBN: 0939616661
Price: $42.95
The meridian test is a powerful assessment, treatment, and self-care system that can be used to improve athletic performance and physical fitness. It simplifies the assessment of strain and injury so that even nonacupuncturists and athletes can learn to apply massage and stretching more effectively.

The M-Test is one of the most popular methods of sports acupuncture in Japan. Developed by Mukaino Yoshito, M.D., of the Sports and Health Science Department at Fukuoka University, the M-Test is based on his extensive experience in physical education and sports medicine. The M-Test uses the meridian system of acupuncture to analyze the movements of multiple joints and muscles in a holistic way. The most suitable meridians for treatment are identified by evaluating a sequence of movements. Flexibility and ease of movement in relation to the meridians are assessed to identify the areas and muscles that need treatment. Based on the M-Test results, the synergistic action of the joints and muscles involved in the movements can be facilitated with acupuncture, massage, or stretching.

For the acupuncturist, the M-Test provides another powerful assessment tool for the treatment of pain and compromised movement. This system is compatible with the traditional understanding of the meridians, but takes it a step further to clarify the relationship between the meridians and movement. Practitioners can render treatment with a better understanding of this relationship and identify the most effective points for treating pain and improving movement. The M-Test can also be used to evaluate the results of treatment or the stretching regimen so that a better strategy can be formulated if the results are unsatisfactory. (from the publisher)

NatureMill ComposterNatureMill Ultra
The NatureMill Ultra Composter is new for 2012. This award-winning composter provides home gardeners with a source of rich, organic fertilizer. Deposit food waste items any time of the day - up to 4 gallon (15 litres) per week
- and through a process consisting of mixing, air flow, heat and moisture - the Composter generates concentrated compost in roughly 2 weeks that is ready to be added to your garden. The energy released during composting destroys odours, pathogens and seed germination, converting 70 percent of the initial waste matter into water vapour. The compost is transferred through a trap door to the lower cure tray chamber, where it continues to compost while you add fresh waste items to the upper chamber.

The NatureMill Ultra is from TEMPERENE - a durable, recyclable, energy efficient material with 100% stainless steel internal components. Composter comes fully assembled.

Please click here to see NatureMill's Composting Quick Guide.

Unit Specifications: 20" high x 20" deep x 12" wide (50x50x30cm); 17 lbs (8 kg)
